Parish completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan in 1989. She received her Masters of Science from the University of California-Davis in 1990, where she completed her PhD. Her dissertation focused on sociosexual behavior and the female-female relationships of bonobos, under the supervision of Sarah Blaffer Hrdy.
