He graduated from the Helsinki Theatre Academy in 2000 and worked as an actor for eight years before becoming blind and getting MS (multiple sclerosis). Poikolainen played the lead role in Teemu Nikki's film The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic (2021) for which he got a Jussi Award for the Best Actor in 2022.
