His 1962 film La steppa was entered into the 12th Berlin International Film Festival. In 1970, he was a member of the jury at the 20th Berlin International Film Festival. In 1979, New Line Cinema released his erotic film Stay As You Are theatrically in the United States. He died at 90 years old of Alzheimer's disease and is survived by his wife of 61 years, actress Carla Del Poggio. He was buried in his family's chapel in the cemetery of Morimondo.
