In 2019, he and his wife, filmmaker Liz Garbus, with whom he has two children, launched Story Syndicate, a production company. Cogan graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and also studied at Columbia University's Graduate School of the Arts in its Film Division.
