He, along with Silkwood and their roommate and coworker Dusty Ellis, were contaminated with plutonium in 1974 while Silkwood and Ellis were employed at the Kerr-McGee Cimarron Fuel Fabrication Site in Oklahoma. A dramatized account of their relationship is included in the 1983 Academy Award-nominated film SILKWOOD, in which Stephens is portrayed by Kurt Russell. Stephens died at age 45 in a plane crash.
