He was the son of photographer Sam Shaw, and apprenticed with several of his father's photographer colleagues, including Martin Munkácsi, Louis Fauer, and Bert Stern. In 2002 Larry Shaw founded Shaw Family Archives along with his sisters Meta Shaw Stevens and Edith Shaw Marcus.
