1984年中山大学文学系毕业后进入CCTV任纪录片编导，1989年日本留学，曾从师大岛渚导演，1993年设立龙影公司，从事纪录片和故事电影创作；1998年拍摄的处女作电影《2H》为华人在日本拍摄的第一部影片。其后一直在日本和中国以混合纪录片与故事片的方式创作新现实主义电影。
