Messiah Hallberg was born in Stockholm and is the son of actors Nils Hallberg and Marie-Louise Werklund. His given name was originally Mårten, but was changed to Messiah before he turned 18. After high school, Hallberg trained as a journalist at Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall.
