He served as the head football coach of the UNLV Rebels from 1973 to 1975 and the SMU Mustangs from 1976 to 1981, and as a head coach in the National Football League (NFL), with the New England Patriots from 1982 to 1984 and the Indianapolis Colts from 1986 to 1991.
